Business Development Curriculum at San Diego State University Zahn Innovation Program

Each semester, all year long, SDSU students, researchers and faculty have the opportunity to apply to the ZIP Launchpad during the application cycle. Once accepted, participants embark on an entrepreneurial journey exploring the problem they seek to solve, validating their solution, building their company, and gaining traction all while surrounded by experienced advisors, mentors, and domain experts.

Being a winner of the ZIP Launchpad and being recognized for having one of the best and marketable new business concepts, the program was all about testing each tenant of the new business concept to determine if a viable business could be crafted and built around the concept. The expert mentors in the ZIP program helped determine what parts of the concept should be tested and how.

Propeller Logic conducted 17 different tests on the design to see how various aspects of the system would perform under real world parking scenarios.

First, our tests needed to show if a viable business could be developed around the key concepts of using a drone to collect parking activity data?

Second, we needed to understand if this new application of technology has a place in the parking space management services industry and if actual market potential exists for the service

In order to better understand where a service like Propeller Logic might fit in the existing parking services landscape, we needed to look at old parking problems in a new way. We looked at the parking scenarios and behaviors for dozens of parking lots around the San Diego area. We developed an accurate and representative new perspective on how to segment and identify parking services by Primary Service Type Orientation

Our research efforts looked at the operational models and dozens of parking scenarios. Propeller Logic’s service model would provide noticeable service level improvements to midsize to large event oriented parking scenarios and all sizes of Attraction oriented parking scenarios.

A New Business Model for the Parking Services Market

Late this summer through the ZIP Launchpad program, we will be presenting the University with all our research findings and will ask to beta test the new service by providing event parking space management services in the SDSU parking lot 2B on days when major events are held at Viejas Arena. The new service would work within the existing framework of how parking services are provided today at the arena. Our proposal would be to offer parking space management services to patrons with oversize vehicles and patrons who want the new feature of purchasing a reserved parking space for an event at the arena.

The option to select the new Propeller Logic services would be added to the existing Viejas event parking services page.
